PETRON AND UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA FUEL THE ENVIRONMENT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Petron Malaysia Group[1] (Petron) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to further their cooperation in driving long-term environmental sustainability initiatives. Areas of collaboration include biodiversity conservation and circular economy, with ongoing projects including the Port Dickson Green Lung carbon sequestration and repurposement of waste into new products.

The Port Dickson Green Lung carbon sequestration project aims to preserve 400 acres of land within the Petron Port Dickson Refinery vicinity by enhancing biodiversity mix, making the area an effective natural carbon sink to absorb carbon from the atmosphere and improve the air quality of the local communities at Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. This sizable land is equivalent to more than six units of Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium located in India.

To promote circular economy, the UPM team is studying the conversion of Bio-Sulphur waste generated from the Petron Refinery into a fertiliser additive. The team has also commenced reformulation research on waste generated from Petron’s Palm Oil Methyl Ester (PME) Plant. These initiatives will help reduce waste to disposal by re-using it and creating circular economy.

“Forests are natural habitats that provide invaluable ecosystem management like climate and water regulation. At Petron, we balance our efforts to support the country’s economic development with our commitment to embed sustainable business practices into every facet of our operations. Collaborating with UPM for the Port Dickson Green Lung project and solid waste studies demonstrates our focused efforts towards biodiversity conservation and circular economy. This aligns with our environmental philosophy which is to ‘Protect our Environment Today for a Better Tomorrow,” said Pn. Faridah Ali, General Manager of the Petron Malaysia Group.

The MoU signifies Petron and UPM’s commitment to a healthier, ecologically richer environment to mitigate climate change. They will leverage their combined strength, expertise, technology, network and resources to progress feasible studies through fields of research, education, specifically designed projects, among others.

UPM is committed to maintaining its position as a leading Green Campus in Malaysia, striving to achieve its environmental sustainability agenda at the university level in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The sustainability efforts carried out aim to create a sustainable campus community that cares for the environment. This sustainability partnership is aligned with Petron’s support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 13, 15 and 17, which cover Climate Action, Life on Land and Partnerships for the Goals.
